[ my kernel sources ]

Quote:

Just a statement regarding kernel source: The Kernel Source is released for all at GITHUB repo given below. BUT Free software does NOT mean no work or time was spent working on it. A lot of my free time has gone into patching/testing this kernel/features integrated in this kernel. If you use my modified kernel source in parts or in its entirety, I kindly ask you mention its origins and to send me a github pull request or PM whenever you find bugs or think you can help improve my kernel hack further. This way the entire community will truly benefit from the spirit of open source.

Thank you !

What Is A Kernel?

Android (like many other Smartphone operating systems) runs on the Linux kernel. The Linux kernel was created in the early 1990’s by a gentleman named Linus Torvalds in Helsinki Finland. It’s incredibly stable, incredibly friendly, and incredibly difficult for the layman to understand and modify. Thankfully it’s also very popular so it has been ported on to a multitude of hardware, including our Android devices.
Think of the kernel as an interface layer between the hardware and software on your device. The kernel decides when things happen, such as the LED indicator gets lit. An application sends a request to the operating system to blink the LED. The operating system then sends the request to the kernel, which makes the light flash for the amount of time requested by the OS.
What sounds like a round-about way to get things done is also what makes the system so scalable and robust. Application developers only have to code in a way the operating system understands and the kernel makes it work on the hardware. This also keeps the application running in it’s own user-space and separate from the kernel. That means when you run the latest uber-cool app that wasn’t designed for your particular OS version, or is still very beta and it crashes, the kernel gives you the option to Force Close the application and the kernel can run untouched.
In a standard Android ROM (we will leave developer images and the like for another discussion) the kernel is bundled along with a set of instructions that tell the device how to load the kernel and the OS during boot. This is the boot.img that you see inside a zipped ROM that you're not able to easily open. The device knows to extract this image to internal memory (the ramdisk) and follow a series of scripts (init scripts) to load the kernel and then the other portions of the OS. That’s what’s happening while you’re watching the boot animation. Interestingly enough this is done the same way for a PC, your smartphone, an Android tablet, or even a smart Linux powered toaster. If you’re feeling exceptionally geeky, plug your Android phone into the USB port on your PC and let the PC boot from the USB device. No, it doesn’t actually load, but you can watch the animation while it tries to match up the hardware support with what’s inside your PC. As I said, Linux is amazingly scalable and as a result so is Android.

Dear kernel and ROM developers.
According to GPL v2 license, under which kernels are released, kernels must be released with source code provided.

To be fully compliant, the thread must contain.

@ kernel devs
  • Successfully build and produce a valid output file, which is the same format as provided in the binary
  • Contain all source code, interface definition files, scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable (it is not required to include the actual compiler/toolchain, but sufficient information should be made available to obtain the SAME configuration, including compiler flags, as used to build the binary version as released
Example.
Quote:

Kick-ass kernel
  1. Built with android-toolchain 4.8 4.8-2013.05 (linking isn't a bad idea)
  2. Branch used to compile (can be a direct link to git)
  3. Name of the defconfig used in build
  4. A short instruction about how to build it (not necessary, but useful)

@ ROM devs
  • if ROM uses custom boot.img, the source must be provided. If it uses kernel by someone else, the kernel thread must be linked in the OP
  • if the ROM contains stock kernel, source must be linked (official site can be used)
  • Using a non GPL compliant kernel makes your ROM non compliant and subject to removal
Violation of GPL is in fact a breaking of the law, so I don't have to explain what could be a final of this.

More information can be found in the news written by pulser_g2.

Thank you for your attention.

Flashtool Release Notes:

* 0.9.11
This version is a big split with every previous ones.
And not fully featured as previous can be.
I changed the UI framework from Swing to SWT because of a better integration with Mac UI.
Here is what is missing from previous releases :
- No multilingual UI
- No recovery installer
- No kernel installer (for 2010 devices)
- No ROM cleaner.
- Cannot Add/Edit/Remove devices.
No TA hex editor (in pro mode)
Version fully compatible with all 2013 devices (Z/ZL/Tablet Z etc etc)
Unified Bootloader unlock feature with the new BLU icon. No more unlock plugin.
As for flashing, BLU is available even without any connected device, even with
unrecognized devices.
Updated SuperSU package. Added servicemnu root hack
(works with Z/ZL for all FW up to .434)
Known working for Xperia T/V too
Added TA partition backup/restore. Using this feature, you can backup TA before unlock.
Restore TA will relock the devicee and get DRM back as well as BE2
(full complete relock). You cannot count on this feature if ever your device is
already unlocked. Missuse of this feature can brick the device

Introduction to Flashtool:
Flashtool is a flashing software that can be used to :

1. Flash original Images (Android 1.6, 2.1, 2.3 Images)
2. Root your phone
3. Install Recovery, Busybox, custom kernels
4. Clean your Rom (remove /system/apps apps of your choice)
(Be careful, unless you really know what you do, do not modify the default list.
This can make your phone stuck at the SE Logo)
5. Clear dalvik cache
6. Optimize (install of JIT v2)
(Disabled in 0.4, will readd it as a plugin for 2.1 phones only)
7. Customize (installs apps found in the custom/apps folder of the flashtool)
8. Clean uninstalled (remove any references to system apps removed in the
Clean (root needed) step)
9. Edit any text file on the device
10. Rebrand your device

As in title, this is just a deodexed + zipaligned + root + busybox stock ROM

Before flashing as any other ROM keep sure system is unmounted or you'll get Error status: 7

If you are not coming from a JB ROM you MUST wipe your DATA!

It might be useful for developers and modders :D

Installing on Locked Bootloaders:
To install this ROM you just need a working recovery and flash it like any other ROM.

Installing on Unlocked Bootloaders:
Install it from any JB kernel with a recovery, this wont rewrite your kernel.

[Baseband] Flash stock basebands with recovery *** Experimental, beta phase ***

$

**** WARNING *****
This is highly experimental, flash at your own risks!
Messing up with baseband is dangerous

**** WARNING *****
This is for Xperia S (LT26i) only

Please read the firsts posts very carefully

Introduction

As I saw various posts regarding flashing baseband from another firmware, I decided to take a look at a way to do it properly.

First, let me clarify something: flashing baseband partitions from flashtool is not enough! In fact, baseband firmware is composed of multiple files stored in /system/etc/firmware. Proof of this is that if you only flash baseband from flashtool, version won't change in the about box. Just replace files in /system/etc/firmware and version changes.

So copy file is enough? Well, not exactly as many reported that flashing partitions has an impact. Looking at partitions extracted from firmware, amss_fs_1 and fs_2 are empty but fsg is not. I suspect that it contains parameters that are used by the baseband firmware.

That's why I came up with these zip files, they install baseband files in /system/etc/firmware and flash amss partitions at the same time.

I'm looking for beta testers, I currently have .211 and .55 basebands. Send me a PM if you are interested in testing.

Instructions
  1. Download the baseband you want to replace
  2. Copy the zip file at the root of your internal storage/sdcard
  3. Optional, but *highly* recommended, copy the md5 at the same location
  4. Reboot to recovery and flash baseband
  5. Reboot to your rom and check version in settings/about box
  6. Please report success or failure to the thread.

FAQ
  • Is it safe ?

Well, I did it multiple times without any bad consequence. I can't promise it won't kill your phone though. As far as I know, this is the first time that amss partitions are flashed this way.

  • What are potential issues ?

First, using baseband from another firmware could lead to problems as rom are tuned for the matching baseband firmware. It could lead to disconnections, problem with calls, bad reception...

One effect I noticed is that agps seems to be reset after flashing. No big deal but first gps fix will take longer.

  • Where are the files ?

I want to do a private beta-testing before releasing them in the open. Contact me in PM if you want to be in the beta-test phase.
